A Symbiotic Eye
Gourd, iron oxide , pigments

This artwork was made from cut gourd. Iron oxide and pigments were used for the pattern, and brush painting and brushing techniques were used. The motifs of the work are a rhinoceros and a bird, the red-billed oxpecker. The two live in a symbiotic relationship, complementing each other. Conservation artist Ogaro often focuses on the unique symbiotic relationship in nature as the theme of his artwork.

There are many wonderful symbiotic relationships among creatures in the natural world. The red-billed oxpecker rides on the back or head of rhinoceroses to eat parasites from its skin. Rhinos do not have good eyesight, but when the oxpecker spots  humans in the distance, it makes an alarming sound to warn the rhino of danger. It is hoped that this unique symbiotic relationship will help the rhinos escape poachers. However…The population of the red-billed oxpecker has been declining due to insecticides sprayed on livestock.
