In recent years, there have been many collisions between endangered loggerhead turtles and small boats. Collisions with boats are one of the major threats to the survival of loggerhead turtles.
A full-grown loggerhead turtle can be about 1 meter (39.37 inches) long and weigh over 180 kg (396 pounds). However, it is difficult to see them swimming on the surface of the water from a boat. Sea turtles cannot assume a defensive stance by retracting their heads and limbs into their shells like land turtles. In addition, turtles' shells are integrated with their vertebrae and ribs. A collision with a fast-moving boat would severely damage the sea turtle and kill it.
If you are a small boat user or know someone who is, please tell them to watch out for sea turtles. Small vessel operators should refrain from using autopilots that do not have a creature avoidance feature and should keep a close watch on the front of the boat.
