In deserts around the world, large amounts of groundwater are pumped up to mine rare metals such as lithium. The depletion of groundwater will cause the disappearance of oases, making it difficult for desert dwellers and other creatures to survive.
Rare metals are used by those of us who use computers and other machines. What we can do now is to recycle rare metals properly.
